- 1918 - German submarine SM UB-16 was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by Royal Navy submarine HMS E34 with the loss of 15 of her 16 crew.
- 1940 - Hitler invades the Low Countries - Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, and France.
- 1943 - 5th German Panzer army surrenders in Tunisia.
