Maritime Museum Hamburg
The exhibition space covers a good 12,000 square meters. Museum visitors can spend hours marveling at exhibits large and small, learning a great deal in the process. Contrasts are what make it so appealing: the model of the sailing ship "Wapen von Hamburg III" is 4.30 meters long, while the replica of a dinghy measures just five millimeters. In this uncomplicated, family-friendly institution in Hamburg's HafenCity, a beacon of maritime diversity, more than 55,000 ship models are on display.
And much more: fascinating paintings spanning several centuries, precious globes, historical nautical charts and sea atlases, and memorabilia from around the world. Examples include hand-painted crown compasses, sextants, medals, uniforms, porcelain from the first cruise ships, legendary bone ships, and original documents from Napoleon and Lord Nelson.
Those who wish can let their wanderlust inspire them. Many of the exhibits, collected from around the world by museum founder Prof. Peter Tamm, are unique and of inestimable value. Different themed areas on the decks are expertly organized and lovingly presented. The aim: to convey scientific content in an entertaining way. Hospitality, including towards school groups, certified accessibility, and a cosmopolitan spirit are top priorities.
