Bergenhaus Fortress Museum

The fortress complex has its roots in the 12th century, when the royal estate of the Norwegian king was located there. Towards the end of the 17th century, the fortifications were significantly expanded, and today Bergenhus consists of the inner fortress area, Koengen, and Sverresborg. After a powerful explosion in 1944, large parts of the fortress were damaged. However, through extensive restoration work, much of the fortress has been restored to its former glory.

Although the Bergenhus Regiment was disbanded in 2002, the site remains a vibrant part of the city’s history. Today, in addition to housing the Bergenhus Fortress Museum, it is home to several other military units, including the headquarters of the Bergenhus Home Guard District (HV-09).

The Fortress Museum has been run with great dedication since its establishment in 2006.
