South Yorkshire Air Museum Aeroboot Sale
The Legends Team visited the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum today where the museum was open as normal while also hosting a well-attended Aeroboot sales day. These events always attract a good mix of collectors, historians and traders and today was no exception, with enthusiasts travelling from across the region to take part in a day that combined collecting, history and plenty of conversation.

The sales area was filled with stalls run by independent military sellers and collectors who had brought along items from their own personal collections, many of which were offered at very reasonable prices. The variety available was impressive and covered virtually every branch of the armed forces. Visitors could browse through military books and research material, original uniforms from the army, navy and airforce, Landrover and jeep spares, aircraft parts and aviation memorabilia alongside a wide range of historic military equipment and collectibles.
For collectors the selection was vast and there really was something for everyone. Whether someone was searching for a small badge or patch to complete a display, an original uniform, vehicle parts or something more unusual, the stalls were full of fascinating pieces. In fact almost anything seemed to be available, from machine gun components to even a genuine Spitfire wheel, giving enthusiasts plenty of opportunities to add something unique to their collections.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of events like this is the knowledge shared by the people behind the stalls. Many of the sellers have owned their items for many years and are always happy to talk about their history and how they came to acquire them. Some pieces come with fascinating stories linked to aircraft crash sites or battlefield recoveries that have been researched and documented over time. Through the dedication of collectors and historians these fragments of history continue to be preserved and remembered. In some cases the research carried out has helped identify locations connected with wartime losses, helping preserve memorial sites and ensuring that the memories and stories connected to them continue to live on.
Alongside private collectors there were also professional traders present who had brought with them some particularly rare and high quality items which naturally attracted the attention of experienced collectors attending the event.
Away from the sales stalls the museum itself offers a fantastic experience and it is easy to spend several hours exploring the different buildings around the site which house a wide range of aviation displays and historic artefacts. Several aircraft cockpits are open for visitors to sit in, something that is always popular with both adults and younger visitors. During our visit the cockpit of the famous Avro Vulcan bomber proved especially popular with many visitors keen to experience a small piece of Cold War aviation history from inside the aircraft.
Facilities at the museum also make the visit comfortable and welcoming. Inside the site there is a café area where visitors can sit down, rest their feet and enjoy coffee and cake while discussing the displays they have seen. Outside there was also a catering unit operating during the event which we sampled and found to be both tasty and affordable. It is refreshing to visit a venue that keeps prices sensible which helps make the museum a great place for families to spend time together.
The museum is conveniently located right next to the centre of Doncaster and close to the motorway network, making it easy to reach whether visiting locally or travelling from further afield. With the range of displays, exhibits and interactive cockpits available there is plenty to see and it is certainly somewhere that a relaxed half day can easily be spent exploring.
The Legends Team will be covering other events taking place at the museum throughout the year and we are pleased to include this excellent museum in the places to visit section of our website along with Google map information to help anyone planning a visit. If you are looking for an interesting day out filled with aviation history, fascinating artefacts and a friendly atmosphere then this museum in South Yorkshire is well worth adding to your list of places to visit. ✈️
