National Deployment Day
Each year on October 26th, the United States observes the National Day of the Deployed, a day dedicated to honoring the brave men and women of the military who are actively serving overseas. The National Day of the Deployed was first established in 2006. It began as a grassroots initiative by Shelle Michaels Aberle, a North Dakota resident, who wanted to honor her cousin, Lieutenant Colonel David Hosna, who was deployed at the time. Recognizing the emotional and physical toll deployment can take on service members and their families, she approached then-Governor John Hoeven to proclaim October 26th as a day of recognition. Governor Hoeven issued the first official proclamation in North Dakota, and the idea quickly gained support across the country. In the years that followed, more states began to adopt the observance, and by 2011, the effort had expanded nationwide, with the day being officially recognized as a time to reflect on the sacrifices of deployed troops.
On this day, Americans are encouraged to show their support in meaningful ways. Many schools, businesses, and community groups organize events to raise awareness and express gratitude to deployed troops. These can include writing letters, creating care packages, or holding ceremonies where the public can learn more about the realities of deployment. Care packages often include comfort items, snacks, toiletries, and handwritten notes of encouragement, helping to remind service members that they are not forgotten.
Social media also plays a significant role in spreading awareness on the National Day of the Deployed.
