Europe’s fighter aircraft industry stands as a testament to multinational engineering excellence, and at the heart of this capability is the Eurofighter Typhoon. Jointly developed by the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Spain, the Typhoon is the most significant and widely used European fighter aircraft in service today. It is a cornerstone of air defense across the continent and a flagship of European military cooperation.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing multirole fighter designed to dominate both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. It combines agility, speed, and state-of-the-art electronics to perform across a wide spectrum of combat roles. Entering service in the early 2000s, it has been continually upgraded to remain at the forefront of European air power.
In terms of performance, the Typhoon can reach a maximum speed of Mach 2.0, approximately 2,470 kilometers per hour, and has a service ceiling of 55,000 feet. Its climb rate exceeds 62,000 feet per minute, giving it excellent acceleration and vertical performance. With a combat radius of around 1,390 kilometers and aerial refueling capability, it is capable of long-range strike and patrol missions.
The Typhoon’s advanced avionics and sensor suite include the Captor-M mechanically scanned radar, with the latest variants featuring the Captor-E active electronically scanned array radar for improved range, target tracking, and electronic countermeasures. The aircraft is equipped with an advanced defensive aids sub-system for threat detection, jamming, and countermeasures, providing full-spectrum survivability in contested environments.
Weaponry is a key strength of the Eurofighter Typhoon. For air-to-air combat, it can carry the Meteor beyond-visual-range missile with ramjet propulsion, as well as AIM-120 AMRAAM, IRIS-T, and ASRAAM missiles for short- to medium-range engagements. For ground attack, it is equipped to deliver Paveway IV and Enhanced Paveway guided bombs, Brimstone anti-armor missiles, and Storm Shadow cruise missiles for deep strike missions. German and Spanish variants also operate the Taurus KEPD 350 missile for stealthy and hardened-target destruction. In addition, the Typhoon mounts a 27mm Mauser BK-27 cannon for close-range combat and strafing runs.
Designed for flexibility and scalability, the Typhoon benefits from ongoing upgrades to its avionics, mission software, and weapons integration. Tranche 3 aircraft and the upcoming European Common Radar System Mk. 2 ensure it remains competitive against future threats. These modernization programs are intended to keep the aircraft in frontline service well into the 2040s, bridging the gap until the arrival of sixth-generation systems such as the Future Combat Air System and Tempest.
