Bottisham Airfield Museum visit
Nestled in the heart of Cambridgeshire, Bottisham Airfield Museum offers an unforgettable journey back to the pivotal days of World War II. Recently, the Legends Live On team had the honour of visiting this exceptional museum, and what we discovered was far more than just a collection of wartime memorabilia — it was a living tribute to the bravery, sacrifice, and innovation that defined a generation.
From the moment you arrive, the museum immerses you in authenticity. Set on the original wartime airfield, which once echoed with the activity of British and American aircrews, the site has been lovingly restored to reflect its operational past. Leading this impressive project is curator Jason, whose passion for history is matched by the knowledgeable team that guides visitors through the exhibits. As you move from room to room, these dedicated volunteers share expert insights and fascinating stories, adding depth and perspective to every artifact.
Among the most striking exhibits is a complete set of 50mm machine guns from a WWII P-51 Mustang fighter plane. Housed in a purpose-built cabinet, this display powerfully illustrates the firepower of an aircraft that became a vital part of Allied air superiority. The Mustang evolved dramatically during the war, and this exhibit clearly reflects the engineering developments that gave the Allies a critical edge in the skies over Europe.
The museum’s attention to detail is remarkable. Mannequins dressed in original wartime uniforms have been given incredibly lifelike makeovers, making each display feel like a scene captured in time. The level of realism is so high, it’s easy to forget you’re in a museum — it’s more like stepping into a time machine.
The communications rooms are especially atmospheric. Filled with original wartime equipment, they look as though they’ve been frozen in the moment of an “action stations” alert. Radios, switchboards, and signals equipment are all laid out exactly as they would have been, creating an intense sense of realism and urgency.
Elsewhere, a home defence section offers an engaging look at the war effort on the ground. The display includes authentic memorabilia, field medical cabinets stocked with period equipment, and examples of the treatments pilots would have received upon returning from missions. It’s a sobering reminder of the toll war took, not just in the air but on every aspect of support infrastructure.
Equally compelling is the prisoner of war section, which recreates the conditions faced by captured pilots after aerial battles over Europe. The display paints a vivid picture of the harsh realities of captivity, while also honouring the resilience of those who endured it.
Inside the hangar, a fully restored Tiger Moth sits ready as if it’s about to be rolled out for take-off. This iconic aircraft, used for training pilots, has been lovingly preserved and stands as a tribute to the early days of aviation. Just outside, a P-51 Mustang now serves as the gate guardian of the museum, standing proudly at the entrance to the hangar. It's a striking sight and makes for an excellent photo opportunity — a symbol of both power and pride.
After taking in the extensive displays, visitors can unwind at the onsite café, which comes highly recommended. Serving up traditional favourites, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal or snack before heading off. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, ideal for reflecting on everything you've seen.
Before leaving, a stop at the gift shop is a must. It’s filled with thoughtful souvenirs and well-curated gifts that serve as lasting reminders of your visit — and of the brave men and women who served from Bottisham during the war. Many of them were American crews, and their stories are preserved with the dignity and care they deserve.
